Berna Namuli

Berna is 31 years old and married with one 15-year-old child, who attends school. Berna rents a two-room house where she lives with two other people: there is electricity but no piped water at home. Berna ensures that the family gets three meals a day. She resides and works in a semi-urban area on the outskirts of Kampala and she works seven days a week.

Berna owns a bar in Kawempe. She incurs extra transport costs to and from surrounding villages, so she uses bicycles whenever she can to transport her goods. The major challenges she faces in her business are seasonality and increasing prices of beer. Berna has been in this business for eight years.

She has been with MCDT for seven years, and this will be her fourteenth loan with her same group mates. She wants to use this loan to buy more crates of soft drinks and beer to sell. Berna aspires to see her business grow bigger and to own a permanent home someday.
