Olga Cheris is a borrower who lives near San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic. She is the group coordinator for Amor y Paz 1 (Love and Peace), and her story is representative of the other borrowers in her group.

Olga (Pictured: center) is 55 years old and lives with her husband and two boys, an 11-year-old and a 19-year-old. They live in Batey Caimito, a beautiful community in the hills of the east-central region of the Dominican Republic. A batey is a community of sugarcane field workers in the rural areas of the Dominican Republic. Bateyes are very remote, hard to access, and most people live in deep poverty. They often lack potable water, medicine, and any kind of reliable electricity.

In order to feed her family and send her children to school, Olga sells used clothing to her community. Typically, packs of used clothes will arrive from the United States, and Olga will buy them to sell for a profit. She will also use this loan to purchase charcoal, a valuable commodity in a community without reliable electricity.

Olga hopes that she will be able to send her two boys to university, giving them a step up in society. One will soon be done with high school, and the other is just entering middle school. This is Olga’s fourth loan with Esperanza, and she has a perfect repayment record! Thank you for lending to Olga and the Amor y Paz group!
