Agatha Johnson, a 36-year-old widow with three children, buys rice by the bag and sells by the cup to the residents of West Point. Agatha talks to her customers politely and sells her rice in a bigger cup – other vendors sells in a little smaller cup than hers and that’s the secret to her business success. Agatha started her business with a small amount of money given to her by her late husband’s family and this has been the only source of income for her family for more than three years.

Agatha and her children have been struggling with a little help from family and friends. Her children are between 1 and 6 years old, in nursery school through 2nd grade respectively. Agatha did not complete high school because she lacked financial support when she was younger; she had no choice but to drop out of her 9th grade class. She lives and works in West Point, close to downtown Monrovia, Liberia. West Point is a very crowded community where life is very hard. As a result of hardship and poverty, the crime rate is very high; therefore, most people living there wish they could afford to relocate.

Agatha's business enables her to feed and care for her children. She dreams of giving her children a better education, feeding them on time and giving them good medical attention. She is aiming to establish a big rice store in the future. Agatha needs this loan to be able to purchase rice wholesale so she can serve her customers.

United Women is a group of five borrowers led by Agatha Johnson.
