Knitting blankets and sweaters, selling fish, candy, food, and condiments, and running neighborhood stores are the economic activities of the members of the Las Mayas group, who belong to the Panamerican Regional Hub. They joined forces recently due to their need to raise capital and make their businesses grow, some by purchasing raw materials and others by acquiring merchandise.

One of the members is Virginia Carrillo, a married woman who is 30 years old with three small children. She says that she was excited to join the group because she needs money to buy raw materials (wool) since she knits blankets on a machine. Six months ago she bought the knitting machine and since then has been perfecting the technique and producing blankets. Now she wants to increase her level of production.

Virginia buys her raw materials from wool vendors in the city of La Paz and sells her products to a variety of customers at the 16th of July market. Prices range from 85 to 200 bolivianos, with the most economical made of common wool and those of higher price made of yarn.
