Irene is 47 years old, she is an industrious woman and lives with her husband. Her only daughter lives and works in another city. Irene works planting potatoes in her own farm and due to the experience gained over the years, she has mastered the necessary agricultural techniques. Consequently, working together with her spouse, they have managed to have profitable crops and have used their earnings to pay for their daughter’s education in Lima (capital city), including room and board. Irene sells her products in the city’s wholesale market, where every Wednesday afternoon (during the crop season) she sells the biggest potatoes for about 30 to 50 soles per sack; she keeps the medium-sized potatoes, hoping to sell them to other buyers visiting from coastal areas. Irene likes to plant this tuber because in spite of the high investment required, she always recoups it and makes a profit; she has been saving to buy more potato fields. This is her fifth loan with MFP, encouraging a personal commitment and advising her fellow group members to continue making payments on time, since she is also the treasurer of the community bank. She is thinking of investing her loan in buying chemical fertilizers and fungicides for her next potato crop.
