Sem Tobe is a 45-year-old farmer who is the leader for a group of 7 people – Tnaomat B1. Sem lives in Naiotel, Taebenu Sub District- Kupang District. It is situated about 30 km from and takes about three hours from Kupang City by motorbike. The road to the village is bumpy and has not been asphalted; it is still stony so it is hard for public transport such as minivans to enter the village. In order to reach the village, people usually use motorbikes or trucks. Naiotel is a remote village; there are no local markets or education and health facilities available in this village. If a family member is sick then they bring him/her to the local clinic which is situated about 5 km from their village.

Only 40 households live in Naiotel Village. Most people in the village have backgrounds as farmers but they usually face difficulty in the dry season as the weather is hot and they have to fetch water from the river which is about 1 km from their houses.

In the rainy season, the community is keen to cultivate vegetables, peanuts, corn and produce coconut oil. They usually sell the agricultural produce in Tunbaun Market (about 22 km from the village) and Oeba Market in Kupang City (about 30 km). They take motorcycle taxis to bring their produce to the market. It costs IDR 30,000 per return trip. In the dry season they can not sell the produce as the farm is dry; they can not plant vegetables, peanuts and corn. In order to finance the family's daily needs, the community usually digs manganese every day to be sold. The price is IDR 1,100/kg.

Sem is a married man and a father of 6 children. The children live with him and his wife. They are:

- Marni, who only graduated from elementary school. She could not continue to high school as Sem was unable to finance her education.

- Jermi in the Second Grade of Senior High School, Sem’s brother helped Jermi so he could continue to High School.
- Yanti in the Second Grade of Junior High School
- Yeti in the Third Grade of Elementary School
- Yona is 3 years old, not at school yet.
- Dina is 1 year old, not at school yet.

Sem realizes that he has to find another option to improve his family's life so that he is able to meet his children's education fees and their daily needs. He heard about TLM's cattle fattening program from the field officer. He is interested in joining the program. Together with other farmers who are also interested in joining the program, they formed a group in order to receive loans to buy cattle to be fattened over 12 month period. Sem is requesting a loan amounting to IDR 3,400,000 from TLM to buy young cattle. The other group members of Tnaomat B1 are also requesting a loan to buy young cattle. All of them hope to have improvement in their lives through the loan.

Up date on Tnaomat B1 Group

Entrepreneur: Tnaomat B1 Group
Location: Naiotel, Indonesia

Hello Kiva Lenders,

Last week, our Kiva field officer went to Naiotel Village to get an up date on Tnaomat B1 Group. The field officer should ride his motorbike carefully when he passed a poor quality road to enter the village. The village seemed so quiet when the field officer arrived as the community is busy in cultivating their farm and raising goats, pigs and cattle.

After arrived in Naiotel Village, the field officer went to a modest house belongs to Sem Tobe – the group leader of Tnaomat B1 Group, but he was not at home. The field officer only met Sem’s children. They were seemed happy even though should live in a remote village. One of the children told the field officer to meet Sem at Church.

Sem was just finished attend the meeting when the field officer came to the church. Together with other church elders, they discussed the plan to renovate their church. Once he knew that the field officer visited him he then welcomed the field officer gladly. Sem told the field officer about his current activities, beside cultivating the farm and looking after the cattle, Sem also participates in the local church as an elder. He was appointed as the Leader of Development Committee so he was very busy recently, but he is never complained as this is the way for him to serve God. In order to generate more income, Sem is assisted by his children -Yanti and Yeti to seek and to collect manganese to be sold. The children usually help him after school.

Sem said that he has received a loan of 3,400,000 from Kiva Lenders through TLM Foundation. The loan has been spent to buy cattle to be fattened over a 12 month period. Currently he is in the second month of the loan. To convince the field officer that his cattle is well, Sem then invited the field officer to see the cattle at the stall. The group decided to place their cattle at the same place so they can help each other in looking after the cattle. Even though they live in a remote place and far away from crowded city but Sem and family always grateful for God is still protecting and blessing them in their lives.

Sem recognized that he has a big responsibility within his family, especially in providing good education and living standard. Sem hopes that his hard working will help him in getting a good price at the cattle selling in the next view months. Accidentally the field officer also met the members of Tnaomat B1 Group at the stall so in this good opportunity Sem and the other group members would like to say thank you so much to all Kiva Lenders for providing the loans. They really appreciate it. They are optimistic that this program will help them in improving their lives.

Thank You Kiva Lenders,

TLM Staff
