Yakob Takain is aged 40 years. He leads Tnaomat A2 Group – a group of 8 farmers. Yakob and his family live in Naiotel Village. Naiotel is a remote village in Taebenu Sub District – Kupang District of East Nusa Tenggara Province. The community usually plants coconuts and bananas on their farm. They sell the crops in the market in Kupang City. To water the plants, the community fetches water from the river which is about 1 km from the village.

There is no public transport available in this area as the road is bumpy and stony. There is also no educational facility available in Naiotel Village; they have to walk about 3 km to reach the school in a neighboring village. If the children plan to continue their schooling then the parents have to send them to Kupang City. The community has to light their houses at night by oil lamp as there is no electricity facility in Naiotel village. If one of the family members is unwell, then they have to go to Noelbaki village to get medical treatment in a local clinic. The local clinic is situated 12 km from their village.

Yakob is married and has been blessed with 2 children; they are

- Otniel in the First Grade of Senior High School, and

- Yusri in the Sixth Grade of Elementary School.

Yakob faces difficulty selling his agricultural produce because of lack of water supply in the dry season. Fortunately, part of the land in this village produces natural stone – manganese - so the community can dig manganese to be sold. In order to generate more income, Yakob and his wife also dig manganese. They start to dig manganese at 07.00 am and work till 05.00 pm. The price of manganese is IDR 1,100/kg. Sometimes Yakob has to dig manganese by himself if his wife is unwell. But even though he has to work hard to meet his family's daily needs and pay his children's education fees, Yakob always thanks God for the blessing in his family that they are still alive.

In order to improve his family life, Yakob is interested in joining the Cattle Fattening Program. As a poor farmer, Yakob can not afford to buy calves as it too expensive. So Yakob, together with other community members, decided to form a group which is called Tnaomat A2 Group. Yakob is requesting a loan amounting to IDR 3,300,000 to buy calves to be fattened over a 12 month period. The other group members also request a loan to buy calves so they can improve their living standard.

They are optimistic that the loan will help them in improving their lives and meeting their children's education needs.

Up date on Tnaomat A2 Group

Entrepreneur: Tnaomat A2 Group
Location: Naiotel, Indonesia

Dear Kiva Lenders,

Last week, our Kiva field officer went to Naiotel, one of the remote villages in West Timor to visit Yakob Takain, in order to get an up date on Tnaomat A2 Group. The majority of people living in Naiotel Village are Timorese. Most of them rely on farming to generate income to fulfill their family needs.

Yakob was attending an activity in the local church together with the other congregation members when the field officer came to his house. They were working together to clean the church surroundings. The field officer should have to wait for him for about an hour. Although he is wearing the same shirt as in his profile picture, this video was taken on separate days.

Yakob is a friendly man; he welcomed the field officer with smile. His wife was not at home at the time as she was seeking for manganese. Yakob is so grateful for having a good wife. With the income from selling manganese they are able to meet their daily needs. Moreover in the dry season, it is difficult to cultivate the farm as the water supply is insufficient to water their plants.

Yakob is busy with his current activities. He said that after he received a loan amounting to IDR. 3,300,000 from Kiva – TLM Foundation, he spent the loan to buy young cattle to be fattened in 12 months. Now he is in the second month of the loan. He looks after the cow regularly. The first thing that he usually does is to check the condition of cow. After ensuring that the cow is well, he then feeds the cow.

The reason for Yakob to join the Cattle Fattening Program is because of the simple procedure applied in this program.

Yakob is thankful for the loan provided by Kiva Lenders through TLM Foundation. He is grateful for the opportunity given to Tnaomat A2 Group members to have cattle to fatten. He is sure that this loan will be useful for him and the other group members in improving their family lives. As the Leader of Tnaomat A2 Group, Yakob would like to say thank you for supporting Tnaomat A2 Group.

Thank You Kiva Lenders,

TLM Staff
