Wan Word Group

These are small-scale business entrepreneurs in the small town of Waterloo, about 22 miles from Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. Business has been growing at a very slow pace for these entrepreneurs because of low capital. With the opening of an SMT branch office in partner with Shine on Sierra Leone in Waterloo; these women formed a group in order to solicit a loan. With a loan, their businesses will improve, they will make more profit and consequently improve their standard of living.

These entrepreneurs named their group Wan Word. Isha Fofanah (left) is the leader of the group. Isha is now 44 years of age. She was born in Port Loko district, northern Sierra Leone. She now lives with her husband and four children in Waterloo. Her husband is a lorry driver and her four children are attending primary and secondary schools. Isha sells charcoal and fire woods. She has been in this business for nine years now. With this loan, Isha expects to buy something like 100 – 200 bags of charcoal and 3,500 piles of firewood in villages near Waterloo.





About Group Loans
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee.
