The seven women of the Soutoura group are all married, and are on average 33 years old with 3 children. They live in polygamous households in Ouayerma, one of the districts of the city of Sikasso, 3rd administrative region of the Republic of Mali.
They work with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso (one of Kiva's field partners) in order to satisfy the demands of their clientele, and are seeking their fifth group loan. All four of their previous loans were repaid without difficulty. They run businesses that include, among others, the sale of potatoes, charcoal, brochettes of meat, ginger, incense, etc.
With their new loan, they intend to buy ten 50-kg sacks of potatoes, 20 bags of charcoal, 15 kg of meat to make brochettes, 5 bags of ginger and 30 kg of "magnokisseni" to make incense. They supply themselves at the grand market in Sikasso city and in the neighbouring villages. They make their sales at stalls in various markets in the city of Sikasso and door-to-door in various areas, mostly in cash, to a clientele composed of men and women.
They foresee realizing a monthly profit of 32,500 FCFA each, which they intend to use for savings and to pay for their families' expenses, with the remainder being reinvested in their businesses.
Some of the members of this group hope to buy land to live on in Sikasso, and others aim to enlarge their businesses.
