Señora Niriam Gonzales Quispe is 27 years old and she has a daughter who is a year old. Her husband does not live with them for economic reasons; he had to go to work in Argentina because he could not find work in Bolivia. Señora Niriam lives in her mother's house which is located in the Maica Centra area of Cochabamba. She has dairy cows on the property which produce milk. All of her milk production is delivered daily to a woman who makes yogurt and other dairy products. Since her husband is away her mother helps her care for the cows which, with a 1-year old baby, is difficult for her to manage on her own.

The loan will be used for the purchase of dairy cows in order to increase her production of milk, and this way she can improve her income and as a consequence her standard of living. Señora Niriam hopes to be able to increase her earnings such that she is able to earn enough to hire someone who can help her with the care of the cows, and this way she would not have to depend on her mother, who is an older person. Also, this way she could have more time to give attention and care to her baby.

Update from Bolivia on your loan!

Entrepreneur: Niriam Gonzales Quispe
Location: Cochabamba, Bolivia

This past Friday, I had the opportunity to stop by Miriam’s home to see how this loan cycle has been for her so far. Unfortunately, Miriam was not home, but I was able to catch up with her mother Simona regarding her daughter’s loan. With the loan from CIDRE, Miriam purchased one dairy cow as well as cattle feed, including soy husks. This past year, many of CIDRE’s dairy cow farmers have had to take out loans for the purchase of cattle feed, as the prices of livestock food have skyrocketed due to the ongoing drought in the Cochabamba region. Miriam’s business has been going well, and so far, she has had no trouble making her loan repayments on time.

The loan has helped ensure that Miriam has earnings coming in to her family and with the new dairy cow, she anticipates the earnings will increase. Miriam dreams that in the future, she will be able to begin construction on a new home for her family.

I wasn’t able to take a photo of Miriam’s mother Simona. She just had a tooth surgically removed that morning and I was sure she was not in the mood to have her photo taken (I wouldn’t be either)!

CIDRE’s mission is to contribute to the sustainable development of small-level dairy/livestock producers and of rural and semi-urban micro and small businesses, through the provision of quality financial services. Their principle goal is to be a leading entity in the provision of financial services, characterized by providing efficient service with sound ethics, creativity, and social engagement with the community. CIDRE is a new Kiva partner as of June 2009; to support more of CIDRE’s Kiva clients, follow this link!: http://bit.ly/1A5JLc
