This description was written by Moses Onyango, a staff member for Kiva and Village Enterprise Fund in Uganda

He got a grant of 100$ US from Village Enterprise Fund (VEF). He started with selling of Oranges and Guavas.

After attending training on business skills twice, he got wider
knowledge on how to choose and run his business effectively. He then shifted to Butchery including buying and slaughtering of cattle and selling meat in his butchery. His business picked up very much and he got enough profit and opened up many other Butchers.

Now, Steve Odongo buys animals from the rural markets where the poor farmers bring their animals for sale so as to meet other requirements in their families.

In the rural markets he buys this animals quiet cheaply depending on the size of the animal like it ranges from 180,000/= up to 280,000/= as a basic price.

The local Government has provided some especially designed slaughter areas and it’s where almost all animals are slaughtered and then transported to different butcheries and this areas are made of cement and poles to ensure that the meat is clean.

His butchery has been build with bricks and has a log for cutting meet inside, where to hang the meat and a table where cut meat is placed with a weighing scale hanging at the window opening.

Business Update

Entrepreneur: Steve Odongo
Location: Tororo, Uganda

Steve Odongo has been in butchery business for quite some time now. He goes to deep in the villages, buys animals (cows) brings them in town, slaughters them, takes to his butcher which is with in town to sell in kilogram’s.

He has been buying 3 animals each time he goes to the villages to buy animals. The price for animals differs depending on the size, ranging from 180,000 – 280,000.

A kilo of meat is_________________2,600

1 cow has roughly________________250 – 300 kgs

From 1 cow he earns______________650,000- 780,000

Therefore when he deducts the revenue, license, market dues and transportation, he roughly receives from each animal a profit of 350,000- 400,000.

When he got loan money from Kiva fund Uganda in January this year, he increased the number of animals he buys and also he has opened many butchers. His services to people are spreading widely. He now buys five animals unlike before when he used to buy only 3 animals.

He is grateful to all his funders who enabled him to reach at a level he has reached now which he never imagined he would reach.

Thank you for making a difference in his life and in the lives of many, may God bless you mightily.

Yours truly,

Stedia,

Butchery

By Steve Odongo

Report from the business owner.

I’m a staff of Kiva office Africa, I visited Steve Odongo to assess his business of butchery, I found out that it was quite fair. He had purchased three bulls for slaughtering.

He told me that the meat is not being bought this month either because of the new food staff and greens which people have resorted since the prices of meat have hiked. He gets few customers who can’t finish meat. And his profits are not good.

He sales one bull for two days and since he doesn’t have a refrigerator, he normally ends up with a lot of loss.  This has made his capital to drop and his profits as well.

He tries to sale smocked meat but it doesn’t pay back well, it just becomes  a loss.

He’s of the view of getting a refrigerator for improving on his business in case of such a problem meat remaining not getting  purchased all.  Also he wants to deal with  both slaughter and selling bulls to other business who also slaughter, to avoid much loss.

Odong’s family is doing well much as he has that challenge in his business. He meets all the needs of his family.  He has promised to pay monthly loan money within a stipulated period given.

Regards to all the donors and supporter of kiva for the work they render to the poor of the poorest.

Thanks

Butchery

By: Steve Odong

Sincere greetings form Hellen Kiva staff. I bring you a report of butchery business of Steve Odongo, I visited in August, 2006. His business is doing well and having many customers buying his meat. I found when customers where crowed all over he could not even I identify me so easily. I was so happy to see that so I decided first to let him serve his customers so that I can talk to him.

When I talked to him, he told me that the business is good this season and he buys many goats from the local markets at fairly a cheap rate then he brings them to slaughter to make some good profit.

His family is happy and they are doing well. The community around that area is also happy of the services Steve is offering to them.

He sends greetings and thanks to all the donors and supporters of kiva fund for the grate work they have done to the poor of Africa.

Thanks,

Hellen
