Alfredo Álvarez Rodríguez is a 40-year-old man who lives with his wife and 4 kids in a rural community in Costa Rica called San Gabriel, located in Yolillal, Upala in the province of Alajuela. It is a relatively large and mountainous rural community located in Costa Rica, Central America. The community’s primary business is agriculture, growing basic grains, and its secondary business is cattle raising.

Since he was very young, Don Alfredo has worked in agriculture, specifically growing passion fruit, a fruit with an unusual but very popular taste. The fruit can also be used in natural medicine and its flower can be used for decoration. He says he has plenty of experience in the care and maintenance of this kind of crop. He has land in which he has grown passion fruit before with very good results when it came time to sell it. For this reason, he would like to expand his plantation, since thanks to this business his family's quality of life has improved considerably.

At this time, Don Alfredo is asking for a loan of ¢680,000 (six hundred and eighty thousand colones), to help with preparing the land and purchasing seeds and fertilizers among other supplies that are needed to guarantee an optimum passion fruit crop.

Don Alfredo is part of the Village Bank of San Gabriel, one of the 100 member organizations of EDESA in Costa Rica. This will be his fourth loan and he says that with the loan he hopes to continue growing as a micro-entrepeneur both professionally and personally. Also, he emphasizes that thanks to this type of organization and easy access to credit it provides, he can spend more of his time on productive activities.
