Skylight Group

The Skylight Group is new to SMEP, and all fifteen members have requested their first loans of either Ksh 15,000 or Ksh 20,000.

The Organizing Secretary of Skylight Group is Violet Njeri, who owns Ghemt Hardware store in Githunguri, a growing trading center outside Nairobi. Violet has run this business for the past eight months, selling electronic goods and building materials such as cable, bulbs, pipes, cement and nails. Previously, Violet was employed as a cashier for three years, and used her savings to open the hardware store.

Violet has requested a loan to purchase more expensive materials such as cable, cement and paint to sell. She would like to one day be a wholesaler of electrical goods and other hardware.

Violet is married, and is the mother of two children: a 12-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy. She describes herself as principled. She believes in herself and achieves whatever she puts her heart into.

The other members of the Skylight group own a diverse set of businesses including a cereal shop, a restaurant, a grocery, and a clothing shop. In addition, some members transport water and buy/sell plots of land.




About Group Loans
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee. Under this arrangement, each member of the group supports one another and is responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members if someone is delinquent or defaults. Learn more
