Her husband, meanwhile, is too old to work, but he has three pool tables to service in his area which enables him to make around $5 each day. Kiva Journal Update for Ly Kim Eng

Entrepreneur: Ly Kim Eng
Location: Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Mrs. Ly Kim Eng lives in Phnom Penh with her husband and children. With her Kiva loan she was able to build extra rooms in her house to rent out, allowing her to earn an extra $25-30 per person. This additional income was used to open a new business, and she now also runs a convenience store. She says that business is steady, and she can sometimes generate $50 a day in sales.

Mrs. Ly shared with us her interesting personal story. During the Khmer Rouge, she escaped to Thailand and lived in a refugee camp there until 1998, when she returned to Phnom Penh. She used to work for FUCINPEC, the main opposition political party in Cambodia, and they were the reason she returned to Phnom Penh. She has since left that party.

In the future Mrs. Ly would like to build even more rooms on the additional land that she owns. However, she is hesitant because she feels her neighborhood is unsafe, and theft is a problem for her.

She is pictured here in front of her new business.
