Batey Nuevo Group 1 & 2

Yonery is the group coordinator of the group Batey Nuevo (New Batey) which is based in a Batey – a small agricultural village centered around sugarcane harvesting in the area surrounding San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic. Here she makes her home with her husband and three children aged 6, 4 and 3.

Yonery is on her third loan with Esperanza and with this new loan she plans to continue improving her business selling underwear in her community. She intends to purchase larger amounts of merchandise so as to have resources available to fill orders when they come in.

With the profits that she gains from this loan, Yonery’s goal in the short term is to purchase backpacks and folders for her children to use in school. In the medium term her plan is to purchase two goats to breed and use for milk to feed her family. In the long term her goal is to send her children to university and to purchase her own house in Quisqeya (a nearby town), to help her family leave the Batey (where the sugar company owns the house), thus escaping the cycle of poverty that plagues Bateys. In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee.
