Yusufu Hawa’s Group

Yusuf is forty years old and single with three children between the ages of seventeen and twenty-two years. She rents a one-room house where she lives with five people. Yusuf doesn’t take care of any additional family members. There is no electricity and no piped water at her home. The family gets three meals a day. She resides and works in a semi-urban area where she sells charcoal. She doesn’t incur any extra transportation costs because she buys from her place of work.

Yusuf sells charcoal in the Owino market, one of the busiest markets in Uganda, and on average she receives thirty customers a day and sells to all categories of people. She works six days a week. Her major monthly expenses include school fees and feeding the family. She has been in this business for the last five years. Yusuf has been with MCDT for five years servicing her eighth loan, working with the same group mates. She wants to use this loan to buy more sacks of charcoal. Yusuf hopes to see her business grow bigger and wants to eventually own a permanent business location and home.











About Group Loans
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee. Under this arrangement, each member of the group supports one another and is responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members if someone is delinquent or defaults. Learn more
