Being a widow and trying to raise and provide for six children can be a gruelling challenge, but Mrs. Ofelia Barrameda, a 60-year-old from Central Leonor Propoer, Brgy. Jonob-jonob Escalante City, Negros Occidental, is determined to provide a better future for her children. She strives very hard to meet all her familial responsibilities.

Mrs. Barrameda originally started a sari-sari, or general store, business 15 years ago, to supplement the income of her husband. It has continued to provide a steady income for the family. More recently, Mrs. Barrameda saw the business potential of setting up a rice-trading business. She started selling rice to the hacienda (sugar plantation) workers on credit. The workers pay her at the end of every week when they receive their weekly pay. The two businesses earn 5,000 PHP per month for her family.

Concerned for the welfare of her neighbors and community, Mrs. Barrameda ran for, and won, a seat in the Baranggay (Village) Council. At present, she has a loan of 19,000 PHP, which is her 13th loan cycle with NWTF-Project Dungganon. It is being used as additional capital for her business, and she also plans to make improvements on her house.
