Carolina is 33 years old and lives with her two small children in La Esperanza, a small rural community located in San Jose de Upala, Alajuela Province, Costa Rica. The region is dedicated to commerce, cattle-raising (for both meat and milk) and agriculture.

Recently, Carolina was separated from her husband and since her two children are small, she wished to start a micro-enterprise, installing a small restaurant serving local dishes in her own home. She says that in this manner she could help with household expenses and she would not have to go out of the house, leaving her children. In the past, she has worked in restaurants large and small, giving her sufficient experience. Also, she has seen that it is a very good business and that it would be well received in her community.

She needs to borrow $1,175 to buy merchandise to sell, plus a refrigerator, a deep fat fryer, and a blender, among other utensils necessary to start her business. This would enable her to provide good service to her neighbors.

Carolina belongs to La Esperanza Womens Community Credit organization, which helps women who are non-professionals or heads of households. It is one of 100 organizations associated with EDESA in Costa Rica. This will be her first loan. With it she hopes to continue her personal and economic development and to participate actively in the credit organization in her community.
