Melania Isabel Cruz Flores is 67. She lives in San José de Upala, a small rural community in Costa Rica, which is located in the Alajuela province. The community activities are business, dual purpose livestock (meat and milk), and agriculture.

Mealnia is a widow with three children. The children are grown and do not live with her, but they do help with different expenses. Melania works in milk production. Specifically, she produces cheese made from milk and other milk derivatives. She sells to her community and to neighboring places. She feels there is an excellent market selling to intermediaries or directly to the public.

Melania feels that thanks to the progress of this project, her living conditions have improved a lot. She also says that since the start of her business her self esteem has improved. She now feels very capable. She has grown a lot on a personal and professional level.

Melania is a member of the Women’s Communal Credit Union La Esperanza. Its members are only women because they specialize in helping women who are not professionals and heads of households. It is one of the 100 organizations partnered with EDESA in Costa Rica.

This is her sixth loan. She hopes to continue growing on and personal and economic level with the loan. She also plans to actively participate in the credit organization in her community.

Melania Isabel Cruz Flores es una señora de 67 años de edad, quien vive, en una pequeña comunidad rural de Costa Rica llamada San José de Upala, localizada en la Provincia de Alajuela. Ahí se desarrollan actividades como el comercio, ganadería de doble propósito (carne y le che) y agricultura.

Doña Melania es viuda y tiene 3 hijos pero ya todos son mayores de edad por lo tanto no viven con ella pero si la ayudan con diferentes gastos. Doña Melania se dedica a la ganadería de leche, específicamente produce leche queso y otros derivados; los cuales vende tanto en su comunidad como en lugares vecinos, que según su criterio, hay un excelente mercado ya sea por medio de venta a intermediarios o al público directamente.

Doña Melania considera que gracias al progreso de este proyecto, sus condiciones de vida han mejorado mucho, también comenta que desde que inicio con el negocio su autoestima ha mejorado y ahora se siente muy capaz, dice que ha crecido mucho a nivel personal y profesional.

Doña Melania es socia de la Empresa de Crédito Comunal de Mujeres la Esperanza; la cual está integrada solo por mujeres, ya que se especializa en apoyar a mujeres no profesionales y jefas de hogar, es una de las 100 organizaciones socias de EDESA en Costa Rica. Este será su sexto préstamo y con él espera continuar creciendo a nivel personal y económico además de participar activamente en la organización de crédito en su comunidad.
