Juana Espino runs a clothing business from her home near Samaná, Dominican Republic. For the past six years, she has been dedicated to providing her neighbors with men’s, women’s and children’s apparel, and has found her business to be quite successful. She took out her first microloan a year and a half ago, and is beginning her fourth loan cycle with Esperanza.

A smart businesswoman, Juana seeks out the best prices for clothing from cities all across the northwestern part of the Dominican Republic – she even travels to the border with Haiti to buy less expensive clothing in order to help garner a profit. She is so well known in her neighborhood that she no longer has to go door to door to sell clothing. Before she goes to Santiago or another location to purchase her inventory, individuals come to her home and request a customized list, and Juana is more than happy to find exactly what they want.

Currently living with just her husband, Juana has seen all three of her children (two daughters and one son), not only get married, but also pursue college education. With her business, Juana has been able to support her children’s education. One wishes to be a nurse and another studies English. Smiling, she adds (as any mom with college-age students might say), “Now they have to pay the university on their own! When you’re married, you pay for your own stuff.”

In the future, Juana wishes to have her own store where she can sell her clothing. She is hoping that future earnings can help her afford to build an extra room on her house dedicated solely to her business. To improve her home, she is also hoping that extra profits might allow her to replace her wood walls with ones made of concrete blocks.

Thank you for your loan to Juana and the others in her group!

Greetings from Dominican Republic!

Juana, the group coordinator could not attend the repayment meeting of the loan, and had left her instalment to another member of the group.

Another member of the group, also called Juana, run a business of clothes and shoes (either new or second hand).

She had no work before she could start her business, with the first loan she took from Esperanza four years ago.

With the money you lent her, she went several times to the border with Haiti, (where she finds better prices), and the city of Santiago. She takes order from her customers and purchases the products in different stores, or at fairs.

She says the loan with Esperanza helps her buy more merchandises, and thus expand her business. She doesn’t consider herself as belonging to the lowest income brackets thanks to the fact that she can buy food everyday for her and her children of 13 and 4 years and his 11 years. She dedicates all her time to her business because she has no other sources of money

She has not had any troubles so far to pay back her loan. In the past, when she happened to have delays or problems, she could count on help from colleagues, borrowing them temporarily the money she needed.

She will not hesitate to ask for more loans to Esperanza, to achieve her goals: "I want to have my own shop in my house because it would be much easier"

If you want to keep supporting groups like La Alternativa, please consider making another loan to an entrepreneur of Esperanza: http://partners.kiva.org/app.php?page=businesses&partner_id=44&status=fundRaising&sortBy=New+to+Old
