Halima Noel

Mambo from Tanzania! This is 32-year-old Halima S. Noel from Kibaha. Halima has been running a charcoal sales business since 2007. She is married with four children between the ages of 8 and 11. She sells charcoal which is small black pieces of dry earth that are used by many Tanzanians as a fuel to cook their daily meals. Women cook food in small coal pots in which they arrange mkaa (charcoal) and add either paper, dry grass, old plastic bags or kerosene in order to light them. Because there is such a high demand for charcoal across the country, being a charcoal seller is quite lucrative!

Halima works at her business for 10 hours per day, 7 days per week, and is assisted by her husband. Halima currently earns about $200 US from her business. She is requesting a loan of TZS 300,000 in order to purchase additional stock of charcoal in bulk. In the future, she plans to open another business. Halima thanks you for your support!

SELFINA has taken a lead role as a pioneer of micro-credit in Tanzania through micro-leasing. The organization is engaged in the economic empowerment of women in Tanzania through the provision of a leasing and leaseback microfinance facility. Customs and traditions in Tanzania make it difficult for women to own land and assets, thus they are deemed non-creditworthy by financial institutions. This leads to poor financial support and poor access to services for women with low incomes. One of the primary advantages of micro-leasing is that it allows clients to use equipment as collateral for future loans with SELFINA, thus enabling them to borrow larger sums in the future.
