Mrs. Sophos Meas Village Bank Loan Group

Mrs. Sophos Meas leads a loan group with 22 members, all of whom live in Boeng Krum Leu village in Kandal province. The members of this group will use their loans for different purposes.

Mrs. Sophos Meas is a farmer who grows rice for a living. She faces a problem because she does not have oxen to do the plowing. That is why she has decided to ask for a loan to hire a laborer who has two oxen to plow her rice field. She will use the balance of her portion of the loan to buy more fertilizer to make her field more productive. Her husband, Mr. Oem Voek, helps her farm. Mrs. Sophos Meas is 37 years old, and she and her husband have five children, four of whom attend the local school while the fifth is still an infant. Six people in this group have end-of-term loans and are not required to pay any principal on the loan until the very end of the term. End-of-term (EoT) loans are AMK’s main product because they are the most beneficial to Cambodia’s poor. This type of loan allows them to repay portions of the principal whenever they are financially able to. Most clients start to make their payments many months before the end of the loan term. Almost all of AMK’s clients make their payments on time. AMK has a delinquency rate of only 0.09% and a default rate of 0% on Kiva loans.




About Group Loans
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee. Under this arrangement, each member of the group supports one another and is responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members if someone is delinquent or defaults. Learn more
