This group is made up of 10 members, who live in the rural community of Huinco, in the province of Huarochirí. The main hydroelectric dam of Huinco is located in this small town, and it provides safe drinking water to the city of Lima. This group works in the retail business. Most of them began working from a very young age. Their businesses include selling sodas, sweets, fruit, food, clothes, and ice cream; these activities are the sources of income for their families. Sonia, who is the president of the group, has worked since she was twelve years old. She didn’t have the support of her father because he passed away when she was 5 years old. Since then, she started to work with her siblings selling stuffed potatoes, jelly, and popcorn. She alone had to pay for her high school education and for her technical nursing education. She couldn’t complete her education, however, because of a lack of money. Today, at the age of 28, Sonia has received her ninth loan from the financial institution, EDAPROSPO – PROSPERIDAD (prosperity). With these loans, she has invested in the purchase of merchandise to supply her small business. She sells sodas, avocadoes, custard apples, and stuffed potatoes in a small basket, offering her merchandise to the tourists and to the cars that are parked there for a few minutes before continuing their journey to the towns in the mountains of Perú. With this income, she supports her husband and the education and nutrition of her children, who are eight and three years old. Sonia wants to give them a better quality of life, which is something that she didn’t have because of her circumstances. With the recent capital that she received, she invested in the purchase of another basket because the one she had been using was in poor condition.
