Irma sells undergarments and also works as a teacher in the small town of Masisea, located along the shores of the Ucayali, the wide brown river that flows past the city of Pucallpa and eventually joins the Amazon to the north. In this photo, Irma appears with her little daughter, Daniela, showing the few pieces of clothing that remain after a recent period of good sales. Irma is twenty-five years old and is a single mother. She works hard for the sake of her young daughter.

Irma has been working with Kiva partner Manuela Ramos for about five years and is a member of the communal bank "Nuevas Amigas" (New Friends). Irma invested her first loan of 300 soles (about $100) in the business of selling beauty products. This business partially financed her university studies. She plans to use this loan of 2500 soles to purchase undergarments and basic grocery products to sell in Masisea, where she works. Irma spends most of her time in Masisea but returns to Pucallpa at the end of every month to collect her teacher's salary.

Irma's goal is to design undergarments and to have her own boutique from which to sell them. She is pleased to be working with Manuela Ramos because the organization gives loans without much bureaucracy and paperwork, unlike most other banks.

Update on Irma Esther Asin Diaz

Entrepreneur: Irma Esther Asin Diaz
Location: Pucallpa-ucayali, Peru

Irma is a 25-year-old single mother. She works as a primary school teacher in the town of Masisea, located along the shores of the Ucayali River, which eventually connects with the Amazon in the North. To supplement her teaching income Irma sells beauty products, undergarments and basic grocery products.

Irma used her most recent loan of 2,500 soles to purchase fabric and sewing sewing materials to make undergarments as well as basic groceries to sell. She says that her dreams are for her daughter to grow up to become a professional and to one day own a store from which she could sell her beauty products.

Irma said that with her last loan she had a problem making one payment. She explained that because she spends much of her time in Masisea, she had to send the money to her sister to make the payment. Due to complications, her sister did not make the payment on time, but Irma says they have since figured out a better system of making the payments promptly.

Irma is pictured here outside of her communal bank meeting.
