Mr. Dramane KONE, 32, lives with his wives and their children in a big traditional family in Wayerma I, one of the working class neighborhoods of the town of Sikasso (third administrative region of the Republic of Mali).

Mr. Dramane KONE tried out a number of businesses without success, then began buying and selling white “bazin” (a damask cloth used for local dyeing), caustic soda, dyes, etc. He has been in the business for 4 years now. He has a shop in Wayerma I opposite the Malian Agency for Press and Publicity (AMAP) in Sikasso, not far from the central prison. Mr. KONE is much in demand with his clientele for the quality of his products.

Wishing to better satisfy his ever growing clientele, he decided to join the micro-finance institution Soro Yiriwaso about two years ago. He is on his second individual loan after having reimbursed the first one without difficulty.

He intends to buy 15 lengths of “bazin” (damask), 10 sacks of potash, 15 packets of caustic soda, and 10 boxes of dye of various colors. He will buy these goods in Bamako and then re-sell them to a clientele composed generally of women who do dyeing in Sikasso and surrounding areas, retail, for cash, and sometimes on credit.

With this loan, he expects to make a monthly profit of 150,000 F CFA which will be used essentially to grow his working capital, help support the family, and pay the interest on the loan, investing any remainder back into his business.
