Ms. Salimata TRAORE is 41 years old and resides with her husband and their children in a large traditional family in Fama, the downtown of Sikasso (3rd administrative region of the Republic of Mali).

After having run many businesses unsuccessfully, she was introduced in the end to making traditional soaps (black soaps) over five years ago.  She learned this business from one of her neighbors.  She operates in her home and is in high demand by her customers for the quality of her products.

To satisfy her growing customer base, she decided to join the micro-finance institution Soro Yiriwaso and is now on her third individual loan.  All the preceding loans have been correctly repaid.

Salimata intends to use this loan to buy 10 drums of waste cotton oil (black pastes), 5 sacks of caustic soda, and 4 cart loads of firewood.  After making the soap (to which several colors may be added: brown, white, but generally black, from which the name comes) out of waste cotton oil and caustic soda, she then sells the soap retail, cash or credit accepted, to customers generally composed of women in her town.

With this loan, she envisions realizing a monthly profit of 120,000 francs CFA that will be used essentially for: increasing her business capital, helping to cover family expenses, paying the loan interest, and investing the rest in her business.
