Wan Word Group

These are members of the Wan Word group. They include Mariatu Dumbuya, Isatu Daramay, Fatmata Kamara and Aminata Kargbo. They are small -scale businesswomen in Makeni, in northern Sierra Leone. They are applying for a loan of Le 500,000 each to help them expand their businesses. With such a loan, they will be able to buy more goods to add to their various businesses, make more sales and more profit, and consequently improve their living standards.

The leader of this group is Mariatu Kamara (left). Mariatu was born in Sanda village, northeast of Makeni city. She is now thirty-eight years of age. She is married to a driver and they have three children. One of her children is in Senior Secondary School II, the others in class five and class four. Mariatu sells slippers; she has been a businesswoman since childhood.




About Group Loans
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee. Under this arrangement, each member of the group supports one another and is responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members if someone is delinquent or defaults. Learn more
