Guillermina Shephard is a budding entrepreneur who is currently employed in retail clothing sales. She sells new, fashionable clothes from her home and in the streets. The selling of used clothes in the Dominican is big business, but Guillermina has decided to sell new clothes in an effort to separate herself from the masses who are selling used clothes. Her clothes may be more expensive, but the newness of clothes is an effective selling tool.

Even though Guillermina has been successful selling new clothes, she needs capital to really expand her business. It had been very frustrating for her, because she knows that she could expand her business, but she couldn’t find anyone to lend her money. She was extremely ecstatic to learn about Esperanza, and you could tell by listening and talking to her that she was eager to receive her loan and begin investing and growing her business.

(Version en Español mas abajo)

Greetings from Dominican Republic!

Guillermina, the group coordinator could not attend the repayment meeting this time, so she had previously handed her installment to another group member.

Maria, who is also part of the group carries on a clothing business, selling several items such as clothes, shoes, curtains and bedspreads, that she sells on the streets. She is on her first loan with Esperanza, and says that it allowed her to strengthen her business because he had no access to credit before.

With the money you lent to her, she went to Santo Domingo (3 hours bus ride) to buy enough merchandises at once to supply her business. She already has experience and knows how to find the best quality products with the best prices in the capital city.

She says that the main change since she received the loan is that she draws more profits from her business. She will reinvest part of it into the business but she is also going to buy furniture that her house lacks.

She will indeed ask for a new loan with Esperanza once she has reimbursed this one. Her dreams are to own a store, that her business flourishes and to hire employees. Apart from business, she dreams that her 3 sons become professional baseball players.

In the communal bank “La Superacion”, composed of 4 groups of 5 borrowers, one of the group leaders is suffering serious illness (thrombosis) and is not able to repay for the moment. Take a look at this video to see how the bank has chosen to deal with it.

If this video has inspired you and you want to support other groups like “La Superacion”, consider making a new loan to another Esperanza’s entrepreneur: http://partners.kiva.org/app.php?page=businesses&partner_id=44&status=fundRaising&sortBy=New+to+Old
