Mary is 25 years old and married. She is a plantain seller and sells at the community market where she lives. She obtains her stock of goods from the surrounding villages and retails them to her customers. She lives with her husband, who is usually able to help her buy her plantain stock, but recently there has been a fall in demand in his business and he has not been able to provide her with enough money to make her purchases. Due to inadequate capital, she is not able to pick enough plantains from her suppliers. She is therefore requesting a loan to buy plantain stock. With her two years of selling experience, she was chosen to be the group leader.
Mary is the leader of a trust bank group called ‘Happy Family.’ She is the one sitting in the middle of the group photograph. Most of the members of this group are petty traders, food vendors, and/or farmers. In this group, members guarantee for one another as social collateral to access the loan and support each other in repaying the loan.
