El Futuro Group (The Future), is originally from the city of Masaya. The women have their own businesses and depend only on themselves. They are well known for their work in their neighborhoods.

Marisol has a small women's sandal-making shop, which she runs with three workers, her father and her children. She is the mother of four children who are seven, nine, 10, and 13 years old, all of whom study and help her at the shop. Her husband helps her with household expenses; he works for the radio. She said that the business is her own, and she buys what she wants for herself and her children. She dreams of improving her business, thus improving her family's quality of life.

Lydia Isabel is an older woman with a family of three teens who attend the neighborhood school. They help her with her chicken-selling business, but her strongest business is selling clothes on credit. She sells pants, shirts, shoes, etc. Her husband works in a parts shop and helps her with household expenses. Through her business, Lydia Isabel takes on extra household expenses such as clothes for the kids, school notebooks, etc. Her business guarantees income for the home, and because of this, she plays an important role in making household decisions. Lydia is the leader of this group; she was elected because she is very responsible.

Elsa del Carmen Jarquín, aside from being the final group member, owns a small women's sandal-making shop. She has one permanent employee, and the rest of the business is run with the help of her children and husband. She also makes and sells baked goods out of her home. She dreams of improving the shop and her working conditions.

Important Information About This Loan
In mid 2008, a movement began in Nicaragua called “Movimiento No Pago” (a movement for non-payment of loans). This movement, supported mostly by farmers of the north of Nicaragua with ties to the left-wing party in Nicaragua, has been organizing protests and making it difficult for some branches of microfinance institutions to operate normally. This movement has been fed by the global the economic crisis, which has made it more difficult for Nicaraguans to pay back their loans. This group has submitted a law to the government to create a moratorium on debt repayment. If passed, the law could have a severe effect on the microfinance industry and banking sector in Nicaragua. Recent information indicates that the situation may be improving as the President of Nicaragua has spoken out against this law and would not support its passage in its current form. The network of microfinance institutions in Nicaragua (ASOMIF) has been negotiating with the government in support of an alternative proposal. Kiva, along with 25 other funders from 9 countries, has signed onto a letter to the Nicaraguan government urging a resolution to this situation without enacting a moratorium on debt repayment. The potential passage of the debt moratorium increases the risk of lending in Nicaragua.
