Adolof Nenosaban is the 46-year-old man who leads a group of 15 farmers - Kuanputun B1 - in Bone Village, Nekamese Sub District – Kupang District. Bone village has a beautiful view and there are many coconut, banana, and palm trees. This village has not been contaminated by air pollution, so the community can breathe fresh air. Most of community members of this village are originally from Timor and they usually speak Timorese in everyday conversation.

The villagers have backgrounds as breeders and farmers, raising cows, goats and pigs and cultivating rice fields, the latter fraught with the challenges posed by inconsistent water supplies and diseases. These challenges are also faced by Adolof and the other members of Kuanputun B1 Group.

Adolof is married and has four children. The children are:
- Doni Nenosaban, a 22-year-old high school graduate now attending the selection process to be in the army.
- Jackson Nenosaban, a 20-year-old high school still looking for a job and now spending his days helping his parents on the farm.
- Melkior Nenosaban, 16 years old in the third grade of Junior High School
- Alwi Nenosaban, 9 years old in the fourth grade of Elementary School.

Adolof and his wife are poor farmers but they are really responsible to their children. Even though they only generate a small income from their business, they always support and encourage their children to complete their schooling. For Adolof, education is important for their future.

Another difficulty that Adolof faces as a farmer is the availability of public transportation, which only operates three times a week, and the location of the market, which is situated about 37 km from Bone village, so their agricultural products cannot be sold faster.

As a father of four children, Adolof wants to improve the living standard of his family, and the cattle-fattening program seems to offer the best prospect for achieving his goal. He is therefore requesting a loan of IDR 3,400,000 to buy young cattle to be fattened over a 12-month period. The other group members of Kuanputun B1 are also requesting the same loan, also hoping to improve their lives

Note: Martinus was replaced by a family member when the group picture was taken.

Update on Kuanputun B1 Group

Entrepreneur: Kuanputun B1 Group
Location: Bone, Indonesia

Dear Kiva Lenders,

Last week, on the 31st of August 2009 our Field Officer visited Bone Village to get an update on Kuanputun B1 Group. The field officer needed for about one and a half hours to get into the village by his motorbike. Bone is a nice village; there are many trees grow by the edge of the road. Most of community in this village has background as farmers. When our field officer get into the village there were many elementary school students walked through the road. They were so friendly by waving hand to people they met.

The field officer went to the house of Kuanputun B1 Group Leader – Adolof Nenosaban. Adolof and family live in a modest house with 4 small rooms; it is constructed of palm branches wall, zinc roof and dirt floor. Adolof usually lights his house by using oil lamp at night as the facility of electricity has not been installed yet in his house.

When our field officer came to his house, Adolof was on the farm so the field officer went to the farm and met him there. Even though he was busy to feed and provide water for the cattle but he welcomed the field officer politely. Adolof then invited the field officer to see the cattle in his cattle stall. The cattle grow well. Adolof then was interviewed near his cattle stall.

Adolof Nenosaban is a 45-year-old farmer. He grew up in Bone Village. In order to meet his family needs Adolof sells his agricultural product (bananas, coconuts) at the market in Kupang City. Adolof and family usually rely on the agricultural product from the farm. After received the loan from TLM – Kiva Adolof is keen and diligent to raise his cattle and take care of the farm. As a farmer he should manage his time well to sell his agricultural product and fatten his cattle. Adolof really enjoys his new activity to feed and to look after the cattle. He is grateful for the opportunity given to him to receive the loan. He hopes that this loan can help him to make his dream come true – that is to have a better life.

Adolof got information about the cattle fattening program from his neighbor who has joined the program. He then interested in joining the program as he can see the opportunity for him to generate profit after the cattle selling in the future. Adolof said that he never feels tired to raise the cattle. Adolof hopes the cattle will gain proper weight so he can sell it with a good price. He plans to spend the profit that he will generate to finance his children’s education. Currently, Adolof has to finance his son – Doni to attend the next selection process to be in the army.

Even though he is quite busy on the farm, Adolof usually participates in community activities in the village.

Adolof is really thankful for the trust of the lenders to provide him and the group members with the loan to buy cattle to be fattened.

Thank you Kiva Lenders!!!
