These are small-scale business entrepreneurs in the small town of Waterloo, about twenty-two miles from Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. Business has been growing at a very slow pace for these entrepreneurs because of low capital. With the opening of an SMT branch office in partner with Shine on Sierra Leone in Waterloo, these women formed a group in order to solicit a loan. With a loan, their businesses will improve, make more profit, and consequently improve on their standards of living.

They named their group, Tamaraneh, a Temne phrase meaning Let us help each other. Ramatu Conteh (middle) is the leader of the group.

Ramatu is now thirty-four years of age and was born in Lungi. She is married to a businessman and the two of them have two children, one in class five and the other still not of school-going age. Ramatu sells cosmetics and has been in this business for twelve years now. She will invest this loan in her cosmetic business.
