Angel José Robles Méndez is a 40-year-old member of the rural Costa Rican community San Cristóbal Norte, which is located about 45 kilometers south of San Jose. San Cristobal is a somewhat mountainous area where people work in commercial endeavors like growing vegetables, coffee, making crafts, and raising cattle among other things. Mr. Angel lives with his wife, Xinia, and his daughter, Angie. He has a farm where he cultivates vegetables. He also has cows for milk production.

Mr. Angel is an artisan, but is becoming a small business owner by beginning an organic farm using hydroponic methods – a business he has been working very hard to establish. His wife, his cousin, Pablo and his wife, all help him with his business and this is how he has been able to get ahead.

What Mr. Angel would like to do right now, is request a loan of 685,000 colones to buy plastic, wood, nutrients, watering cans, and various supplies he needs to develop in the most optimal way. He would also like to buy materials to improve his work area. He hopes that in this way his micro-business will grow and generate income that will improve his living conditions.

Mr. Angel is a member of San Cristobal Norte’s communal bank “SACRIN.” SACRIN is one of the hundreds of EDESA’s communal banks in Costa Rica. He has received two micro-loans and has paid both back responsibly. He says that thanks to these loans he has been able to develop and grow as a person.
