Carmen González Carrillo is 55 years old and lives with her husband in a small Costa Rican rural community called Las Delicias de Upala, which is in the province of Alajuela. There she farms dual-purpose animals (cows can be used for meat and milk) and cultivates basic grains such as rice, beans, corn, etc.

For many years, Carmen and her husband have worked at this dual-purpose farming. They sell their products to their neighbors, who are very satisfied with the quality of the products offered. In this particular case, the demand is greater than what they can supply.

Thanks to this business, Carmen's life and the lives of her family members have improved greatly, so Carmen is now requesting a loan of 685,000 colones to purchase two more cows and a bull in order to increase production. She understands that more cows mean more time providing attention and care. All the same, she wants to be a successful micro-businesswoman and improve living conditions for herself and her family, which motivates her to work so hard.

Carmen is a member of the Empresa de Credito Communal Datraban, one of the 100 member organizations of EDESA in Costa Rica. This will be her first loan, and with it she hopes to continue growing personally and economically. Also of note is that thanks to this type of organization and other loan providers, she can dedicate more time to productive activities.

Journal Update for María

Entrepreneur: María Del Carmen González Carrillo
Location: Alajuela, Costa Rica

María recently received her first Kiva loan and used it to purchase two young cows, which she keeps on a plot of land next to her house along with her other cattle. Cows are expensive in Costa Rica so María says that it is better to raise them from young. However, this means that the cows are not currently producing any milk but are an investment for the future. María expects to see an impact on her business within a year, and plans to sell her milk to her neighbours in the community and keep some for her family.

To date, María has not experienced any problems with her project. The cows are healthy and María hopes to expand the business in the future and breed more cows to use for both meat and dairy products. She would like to develop it into the family business so they can all work together.

María is very pleased with her Kiva loan and thinks that it is a great option to have.

Additionally, as a member of the Community Credit Bank, Datraban, María also has a share in their nursery project. The plant nursery was set up five months ago; 50 percent funded by a donation and the rest by the individual members of Datraban. The project is still in the early stages of development, but the members hope it will soon prosper and help to benefit the community.

Below is a photo collage to show María with her cows, and also some plants from the nursery that she is involved in.
