Antonio Oporta Espinoza is a 43-year-old man who lives with his wife and two children in the small, rural, Costa Rican community of Las Delicias de Upala in the province of Alajuela. He works in commerce, raises cattle (milk and meat), and grows basic grains like rice, beans, and corn.

Mr. Antonio has worked with both milk cows and raising cattle for meat for many years. He sells his products to his neighbors and to people in his community and they are happy with the quality he produces. Currently there is more demand than he can satisfy.

Mr. Antonio thinks that he and his family have been able to improve their living conditions bit by bit because of the success he has had with his business. He has also been able to help the community, a community that is regularly struck with bad weather and unemployment.

Mr. Antonio would like a loan of 685,000 colones to buy several young bulls so he can increase production. He knows that having more cows will be a greater sacrifice and make more work for him. But his desire to be a successful small business owner and improve life for his family motivates him to work even harder.

Mr. Antonio is a member of the communal bank “Datraban.” “Datraban is one of the hundreds of EDESA's member organizations in Costa Rica. This will be his second loan and he hopes to use it to keep growing, on both personal and economic levels. He also will continue to be an active participant in helping to develop his communal bank.
