Abong Lydia Ngwen

Lydia is single with four children. She lives in Ntamulung quarter in Bamenda, Cameroon. Lydia and her entire family live in a house with eight rooms, one sitting room and a kitchen. Being a very hard working woman, Lydia had to overcome some challenges in life such as taking care of her children, especially as she is living in her parents house. It is not easy for her living there with other family members and children.

Lydia runs a call centre, an embroidery business and also sells food supplements in front of their compound with the support of her children. She plans to invest this loan in her existing businesses of call centre, food supplement and embroidery. She plans to expand these businesses since she has been doing them for a number of years.

This will be Lydia’s fourth loan from GHAPE; she has been a member since 2005. She has been quite successful in the past with her businesses due to her location (right on the main road), the quality of her products, and her reasonable prices. Also, with her experience, she is now having more customers who buy her products.

Part of her profits from this loan will be used to buy a plot where she will construct a house in the future for her and the children. And another part will be used to improve her farm. Lydia does not foresee a problem with her loan repayments as they are quite small repayments every month. She intends to start repayment in the fourth month after taking the loan.

The Grounded and Holistic Approach to People's Empowerment (GHAPE) is a non-profit NGO based in Bamenda, Cameroon. GHAPE works towards the empowerment of the poor and poverty alleviation through a highly multi-faceted approach. Every client is trained in business management, basic health, life skills, financial management, profit and loss, and family values. Clients are also required to contribute a small amount into a personal savings account; most clients save much more than the minimum requirement. GHAPE instils a sense of family and community within its clients and staff and has developed a strong bond of trust between the organization and its clients.
