The members of this group all live in the same neighborhood and have a variety of businesses, including selling clothes, cosmetics, food, and shoes, and many of their husbands drive taxis. Though there is a lot of competition in the area, the effort and dedication that these members place in their businesses has allowed them, thus far, to stay ahead of the curve. All of the members have previous experience taking out loans, and would like to have another loan to help increase the amount and variety of their wares and bring in more income for their families.

Update on your loan to Renacer group in Bolivia

Entrepreneur: Renacer Group
Location: Location Undisclosed, Bolivia

Renacer group had their meeting under a big pavilion made of bamboo and jatata, a type of palm tree. One of the members is affiliated with the owner of the pavilion. These women were sharp and warm, and the loan has helped all of them improve their qualities of life.

Candelaria Maria is a very warm elderly woman who has sold lunch in a restaurant for ten years and has been taking out loans for two years. She used this loan to buy a big freezer for her restaurant to store soft drinks, beer, etc for her customers, and small TV to hang from the ceiling. The loan has helped her a lot and her profits have increased since her customers enjoy the extra convenience. With her extra earnings, she bought a small plot of land on which she hopes to build a new restaurant, since it’s on the main street and her current restaurant is on a small interior road. Candelaria very was grateful for her loan and wanted to say “thank you” for allowing her to improve her quality of life.

Alva is 32 years old and attends her sandal stall in the market twice a week and stays home with her four children (13, 12, 8, and 6) the rest of the week, while her husband works in crop spraying. “It’s a lot of work raising the kids,” she tells me a laugh. “You always have to be helping them with their homework and taking them to and from school.” With this loan, she was able to vary her products and make more profits. With more profits, she has been able to improve her home (painting, curtains, etc.),provide better for her children, and gain access to more products. She told me about her personal dream with a huge, excited grin. “I want to make my business HUGE. I want to have my own workshop with machines and workers, where I design the shoes and have them made myself, since right now I just buy and sell shoes.” She also thanked me for coming to talk to them.

Adela sells clothing by order, and also sells other products that her clients request, like electrical appliances like pressure cookers and blenders. She used her loan to buy more clothing for her business, and it has improved a bit and allowed her to provide more for her children that are 14 and 15 years old. In the future, she would like to expand her business more.

Francisca’s loan has helped her to increase her jeans business, while before she could buy 20 pants at a time, now she can buy 35, and she make about 7 dollars for a pair of pants. She has 4 children (12, 11, 7 and 5), and she tells me that the family’s quality of life has improved a lot, especially in providing for the kids’ school needs. She tells me, “In the future, I would love to own my own house and double my sales.” Also, right now she sells jeans from catalogs, and she would like to sell her own products that she buys from different sellers, since she won’t have to pay a portion to the company, and she plans to reach that goal in one year.

Maria Alejandra has a small restaurant, for which she bought tables and more supplies. Her business is doing better than before, so she is very happy. She has three kids that are 7, 4, and 3. Maria is looking forward to taking out another loan so that she can make a pavilion for her restaurant and build a stronger wall on her house. Right now, her walls are made of wood, and she wants to build brick walls since the wind in this city is very strong.
