Señora Celia Escobar Ferrufino is 31 years old and has been married for more than eleven years. She has two daughters and a son. When school is over for the day, the two girls help her look after the cows. Celia puts her son in a nursery in the afternoons. She lives in the community of Sumumpaya in Cochabamba where she has three cows, the milk from which she sells to a small cheese-making business.

Celia looks after the cows in the mornings, and in the afternoons works as a cook for a local business. Her husband has been in charge of maintenance at the cemetery for almost 15 years.

The loan will be used to buy two cows so that the production of milk can be increased. This will also improve Celia’s earnings so that it will no longer be necessary for her to work in the afternoons; she can spend the whole day caring for the cows and spend more time with her daughters. The family was robbed two months earlier and lost almost everything they owned. They see this loan as a chance to get back on their feet financially.

Update from Bolivia on your loan!

Entrepreneur: Celia Escobar Ferrufino
Location: Cochabamba, Bolivia

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to stop by Celia’s part-time job at a local orphanage to see how this loan cycle has been for her so far. With the loan from CIDRE, Celia purchased cattle feed, such as corn and soy husks. This past year, many of CIDRE’s dairy cow farmers have had to take out loans for the purchase of cattle feed, as the prices of livestock food have skyrocketed due to the ongoing drought in the Cochabamba region. Seminia’s business has been going well, and so far, she has had little trouble making her loan repayments on time. The only difficult payment was the first one she had to make, and she was late on it because of her husband’s illness. Very sadly, Seminia’s husband has been very ill and recently fell into a coma. Seminia is praying for his health and that is her main concern and stress right now. She spends all her free time at the hospital by his side.

The loan has helped ensure that Celia has earnings coming in to her family and that her cows stay healthy. Celia dreams that in the future, she will be able to grow her dairy cow farm more and more and have a very stable business.

Below is a photo of Celia taken during my visit yesterday.

CIDRE’s mission is to contribute to the sustainable development of small-level dairy/livestock producers and of rural and semi-urban micro and small businesses, through the provision of quality financial services. Their principle goal is to be a leading entity in the provision of financial services, characterized by providing efficient service with sound ethics, creativity, and social engagement with the community. CIDRE is a new Kiva partner as of June 2009; to support more of CIDRE’s Kiva clients, follow this link!: http://bit.ly/1A5JLc
