Marcia Mejia Diaz, pictured in the middle, is the coordinator of her five-member group. She resides in Carlo Alvares, a small town in the sector of Villa Mella, part of Santo Domingo Norte. Marcia is a single mother and lives with her two sons. The youngest is 16, and is a senior in high school and wants to study electronics. The eldest, 18, is a sophomore in college who wants to study informational engineering and is learning Japanese. Marcia has had six years of experience working as a massage therapist, going home to home.

With this loan she plans to buy two massage machines that would help her avoid unnecessary strain on her hands, so she can have more sessions per day. She would also invest in massage lotions and ointments to sell which boost her income. Through Esperanza, Marcia plans to take marketing courses in order to become a better businesswoman.

Through the additional income from her business as a result of this loan, Marcia hopes to be able to pay for her son's college without it being such a huge burden on her household. She also hopes to begin to save part of her income so her eldest son can study abroad in Japan in a year or two. One of her dreams is to open her own aesthetic center, where she would have others work for her, and only attend lifelong customers, while she manages the business.

Marcia will share this loan with the other members of her group.

Empowerment

Entrepreneur: Arcoiris Group 2
Location: Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

This morning I had the pleasure of talking with Yosari Acosta Molina, a member of Arcoiris who is currently repaying her first loan cycle as an associate of Esperanza International. She used her loan to support her accessory business. Yosari bought beads, thread, clasps, earring studs, and more in order to make th jewelery that she sells on the streets. With the jewelery making skills that her cousin taught her, she has begun creating and selling her products on the street to a wide range of customers. She says that she´s always very nice to the customers so that they´ll come back and buy more.

Throughout this experience Yosari has become much more confident in herself and her self-esteem has greatly risen. Before, she describes herself as timid and was very scared to accept the loan since she knew nothing about business. However, she has quickly adapted and has taken on much responsibility that she could have never before imagined. With the increased income she has been able to buy more food and clothing for her two year old boy and in the future hopes to gain enough to change her dirt floor into concrete and put her child in school.

Yosari thanks you very much for helping this dream continue on its way and now looks forward to a prosperous future.
