Mary Abakah

Mary Abakah is married and has four dependents. She did not receive any formal education. Her husband is a casual worker with Ghana Education Service.

Mary is a food vendor who operates a chop bar in Ekuase (locally, "chop" means "eat", so a "chop bar" is a place where you go to eat). Mary sells banku (a food made out of fermented corn cassava dough), fufu (pounded boiled cassava with boiled plantain) and boiled beans and fried ripe plantain, which she has done since 1997.

Mary uses all her income to assist her husband in the housekeeping and other financial commitments. Mary will use the loan to purchase more foodstuffs to cook and resell. With the new profits from her expanded business, Mary plans to reinvest in her business.

This organization has had very serious delinquency problems brought about by problems with its credit methodology, local environmental shocks including a depletion of local fisheries in its core area of operation (Cape Coast and the Central Province), and insufficient follow up with late clients. Lenders to this business should be aware that there is an increased risk of not getting repaid on this loan due to the challenges facing the Field Partner.
