Tautalalelei is a thirty-six year old mother of three. She lives in the small Samoan village of Safaatoa Tai. She is a very energetic woman who successfully raises her children and runs a plantation where she raises taro, bananas and yams. The plantation is the family’s main source of food, and is also their only income. Tautalalelei sells her crop at the local market on Fridays and Saturdays. From this she clears a profit of about ST 200 a week (USD 80). This profit is critical to keeping current with her children’s school fees and is thus a major support to ensuring they have a bright future.
