Juan Carlos Pernudez Cabrera is a 28-year-old young man who lives with his father in a small rural community of Costa Rica called Las Delicias de Upala, located in the Alajuela Province. Businesses here include double-branched produce (meat and milk) and growing various basic grains such as rice, beans, and corn among others. As there is high unemployment, Juan Carlos wishes to begin a small agricultural business specializing in growing rice to sell locally as well as to neighboring communities. According to Juan Carlos, there is an excellent market to sell to middlemen or directly to the public.

Two years ago he began to grow rice, taught by his father how to care and maintain for this type of crop. He has a small plot of land where he has previously sown rice and had good results. Now he would like to expand this crop since thanks to its profitability he has been able to improve his family's quality of life considerably.

Juan Carlos is now requesting a micro loan of 684,000 colones to prepare the land, and buy seed, fertilizer and other supplies necessary to guarantee an optimal rice harvest. Juan Carlos is a member of the Empresa de Crédito Comunal Datraban (The Datraban Business Credit Collective), one of 100 organizations belonging to EDESA in Costa Rica. This will be his second loan and with it he hopes to grow personally and economically. He notes that thanks to this type of organization and other loan facilitating means he has been able to spend more time on productive activities.
