Mr. Gustavo Villavicencio Manzanares is 45 years old and lives with his mother in a small rural community of Costa Rica called Las Delicias de Upala, located in the Alajuela Province. Businesses here include double-branched produce (meat and milk) and growing various basic grains such as rice, beans, and corn among others. As there is high unemployment, Gustavo wishes to begin a small agricultural business specializing in growing rice to sell in the community. According to Gustavo, there is an excellent market to sell to middlemen or directly to the public.

Gustavo has worked growing rice since he was very young so he has experience caring and maintaining this type of harvest. He has land in which he as grown rice before with good results, which is why he wants to grow more. Thanks to this type of business he has considerably improved his family's quality of life. Gustavo is now requesting a micro loan of 300,000 colones to prepare the land, and buy seed, fertilizer and other supplies necessary to guarantee an optimal rice harvest.

Gustavo is a member of the Empresa de Crédito Comunal Datraban (The Datraban Business Credit Collective), one of 100 organizations belonging to EDESA in Costa Rica. This will be his first loan and with it he hopes to grow personally and economically. He notes that thanks to this type of organization and other loan facilitating means he has been able to spend more time on productive activities.
