The monsoon season brings heavy rains to Nepal and affects entrepreneurs, like Laxmi Shrestha, from running business as usual.

Laxmi is the owner of an outdoor shoe business and sells her wide variety of shoes on a street path in a bustling street of Tangal. There is no protection from the weather and she has a tarpaulin to pull over her shoe collection to protect from the heavy rains.

In spite of these challenges, Laxmi remains optimistic and assures me that business is doing well despite the rains. Laxmi has been able to meet all of her loan repayments on time and is grateful for the opportunity it has given her to expand.

Laxmi is currently repaying her second Kiva loan which she used to purchase more shoes for her business. Laxmi explains that on a good day she sells four pairs of shoes, each pair going for about 180 Nepalese Rupees (US $2).

Laxmi’s husband also works selling shoes and has a similar business to Laxmi, although he also sells clothes. Laxmi and her husband use a large portion of their income to send their children to a private school.

Laxmi hopes to be able to take out another loan in the future so that she can move into a shop with four walls and a roof so her business is protected from the monsoon season.
