I have run a grocery store for 3 years now. My wife and I are in charge of it and it makes us very happy because it is the source of income for my family. It is what has allowed us to raise our 2 chldren and give them everything basic that they need. It has also allowed us to pay for our home and carry on with the business. Therefore, I am asking for a $1,200.00 loan so that we can expand the business and have more merchandise to sell.

update on loan to Gutierrez family

Entrepreneur: Guadalupe De Jesús Alonso Gutiérrez
Location: Nuevo Laredo, Mexico

Update from Brendan McBride, Kiva Fellow with FVP in Nuevo Laredo

I met Guadalupe’s husband, Victor, on my visit to their grocery business in the far-flung Reservas Territoriales neighborhood of Nuevo Laredo. The grocery business is one way that they support a family with five children, all under 12 years old. Victor also works full time as a trucker, transporting merchandise throughout Mexico. His wife spends her time tending the business and caring for the children.

The borrower just paid back the loan to Kiva borrowers. Victor explained that they used the Kiva loan to expand their merchandise and to make some improvements to their business/home, including strengthening the roof. He said that it would have been very difficult to put together $1,000 to expand their inventory without such a loan. This is the fourth loan that they have taken from FVP, but the first funded by Kiva lenders.

The family’s idea is to continue gradually expanding the business. They have started, for example, to sell eggs wholesale. Since this neighborhood is located far on the outskirts of the city where larger stores are located, the market offers a niche for such wholesale goods. Victor said they have also considered seeking a permit for beer sales, and are thinking about the feasibility of opening a small butcher shop on the premises. Whatever direction he takes, he said he is certain he will seek another loan to help him achieve his goal.

*Please note that the original loan request listed an incorrect number of children in the Gutierrez family, saying there were two children. At the time of the loan there were four children, and a fifth child was recently born.*
