The members of the “Nuevo Renacer” communal bank are represented by Zulema and the group consists of 15 members who are from the Las Pampitas neighborhood. The majority of the members have their small businesses in this neighborhood. Within the group, some are family members—Dionicia and Dora are sisters. Each has their own independent income, so this is not considered an obstacle for the group. The members work in various commercial and service activities, such as cosmetics sales, grocery sales, snacks and meals, and some work in businesses such as a hair salon, sewing, and transportation. The loan is for buying more merchandise and to buy automobile parts. Some of the members have had experience with other similar lenders, and with respect to Fundación Agrocapital, some have already participated in one loan cycle and have demonstrated responsibility and follow-through in their payments.

Update on your loan to Nuevo Renacer group in Bolivia

Entrepreneur: Nuevo Renacer Group
Location: Location Undisclosed, Bolivia

Today, I journeyed out to the quiet part of town near the river, where Nuevo Renacer group lives. We sat on chairs and tables set up on the dusty earth outside of a member’s home, where her chickens, ducks, and dogs strolled around and interacted with the members’ little children. The women struck me as very friendly and sharp, even though many of them were not used to writing their name.

Gabi is a sweet woman with an interesting story. Gabi used to sell chicha, or a beverage made from fermented corn, outside her home. She told me proudly, “It used to run really well; I would sometimes make 115 dollars in three days!” Her husband at the time made her sell the stand and move to another location, where she felt very out of place since she did not know anyone. He turned out to be abusive, and Gabi sustained the home by herself with her own income from her chicha business, which she was able to re-start and sustain through micro-loans. She divorced her husband after two years, and now she has re-married and is happy in this marriage. She used this loan to fix her fridge, which was broken, with 100 dollars out of her 142 dollar loan. She is excited about taking out another loan and opening up her own beverage stand outside of her home. “My house is right in front of a soccer field, so I’m sure drinks will sell well,” she told me. “Drinks sells better than food here!” she told me with a laugh. “I keep saying that and no one believes me. They’ll see once I have my stand.” Gabi would really like to save up some money from her stand so that she can buy something for the house.

Dora sells sandals and shoes by walking around the neighborhood. She used prior loans to start her business, and she tells me that it has helped her a lot. Before, she used to wash clothes in people’s homes, but she did not make enough income to provide her children with everything they needed. Now, her profits have increased and she can provide her children with school supplies or other things they need. They are always in need of something, and now she has some profits that she can use to provide them those things. This particular loan she used to buy a fridge to keep vegetables. Now, she does not have to make a trip to the market every day, since she can buy enough for the whole week at a time. She is sustaining her whole house right now, since her husband recently had a hernia operation ($200) and is staying home from work. In the future, Dora would love to have a market stand of her own since she gets tired from walking around all day.

This is Neiza’s second loan. Neiza sells clothing on foot and used her first loan to invest in merchandise, which increased her business. Then, she got sick with a heart illness and used this whole loan on her treatment, which cost her around $185. Since her husband is a construction worker, they were able to pay back this loan, and now she is back to selling clothing, and she is taking out a third loan to re-invest in her business. She is happy how the loan has helped her, since without it, it would have been very difficult to pay for her surgery. In the future, she would love to have her own market stand.

Ausencia sells knit wares on foot, like jackets, caps, etc. She used her loan to buy more thread and wool, which has increased her profits and helped her out in the home. Her husband is a construction worker and her two adult sons work in construction and carpentry. In the future, she would like to work better so she does not miss any payments.

Delcy sells empanadas, or baked pastries, outside of her house and used her loan to buy more material for her baked goods, like flour and oil. Her profits have increased and now are enough to buy food for her household, but not for much more than that. In the future, she’d like to have her own little restaurant attached to her house.
