Juliet is a married woman with 6 children and caring for 2 that are not her own. She is a nurse by profession, but she dropped out of work as a civil servant in 1997 and decided instead to open up her own business.

With the little savings she had, she was able to start up KCB Nursing Home. However, she has some challenges in the business mostly when there are too many patients to properly care for and the services are limited.

Limited services are caused by lack of enough capital to acquire more drugs and employees. She currently has only 1 employee who helps her.

She wishes to increase her stock and with this loan, she will be able to acquire money that will help in employing 1 or 2 more employees. When given a loan of $800, this will be of great help to her and improve the quality of the care she is capable of providing.

Juliet says thanks alot.

The business has grown indeed. The loan money she got helped her a lot that she was able to acquire beddings for admitting those patients who will be on a bad conditions.

Now the drug shop that used to operate has a place for drug sales only, is now a clinic that admits patients who are badly off.

Thanks alot dear lenders for your great help that business are growing bigger and bigger.

Business is going well!

Entrepreneur: Juliet Anyonga
Location: Bukedea, Uganda

Juliet used the money from her loan to increase stock in her pharmacy, and she also used the money to expand her sales of prepaid cell phone calling cards. She had previously been selling the cards, but had very little capital and was not able to stock enough cards. The same was true for drugs in the pharmacy. What may not be obvious is that many shop owners in Uganda are extremely poor, and at times will not have the money to stock certain staple drugs – in that case the store simply won’t have the drug. In addition, they are even less likely to stock less common drugs that may still be critical to a sick person’s health. While I was there visiting Juliet, a mother came into the pharmacy with a sick baby, and they were surely quite happy that Juliet had adequate stock to treat the baby!

Since getting the loan, sales for Juliet have been going well, and the capital has helped her business grow as she can now meet all of the demand of her customers.

She’s very grateful for the help and would like to thank the lenders for her loan – it has helped her and her family live a happier life!

Juliet is pictured below in her pharmacy with her husband and some of her children.

Best-

Shelby

Loan Refunded

Entrepreneur: Juliet Anyonga
Location: Bukedea, Uganda

This loan has been refunded for the following reason:

As you may be aware, each business on Kiva's website is posted by one of Kiva's 60+ Field Partners in 39 developing countries. A Field Partner is an independent microfinance institution that has a history of lending to the poor for a social purpose. They screen each entrepreneur, post his/her profile on the Kiva website, and administer your loan.

Kiva routinely audits each Field Partner to ensure your loan is being dutifully administered to the entrepreneur you've selected. In the course of auditing our Field Partner, Women's Initiative to Eradicate Poverty (WITEP) in Uganda, Kiva discovered that some entrepreneurs were not receiving the full amount of their loans.

This violates Kiva's policies and we have terminated our relationship with WITEP. All of the loans made to entrepreneurs served by this Field Partner have been refunded. We hope you realize that our audit uncovered a true exception to the norm; the vast majority of our Field Partners administer your loans with the highest integrity. Kiva will continue to audit Field Partners to ensure your loan is being dutifully administered and to make our website a model for transparency in international development.

To help inform your choice of Field Partner as well as entrepreneur, we have launched a new feature on the site which helps you evaluate the Field Partner's performance in your lending decision. See www.kiva.org/about/partners/ for details.

We hope that you give lending to the working poor another chance by re-lending your Kiva Credit to a new entrepreneur on our site.
