Short Street Strikers Group

Those pictured are Zainab Tarawalie, Mohamed P. Kamara, Alhaji Bangura, Ibrahim Jalloh and Aminata Shery. They named their group Short Street Strikers, named after the street where the group leader sells. They are local entrepreneurs in Waterloo, twenty miles from Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone.

They are requesting a loan to enable them to buy more goods to sell. With more goods at their disposal, they will be able to make more profit and improve on their livelihood.

Zainab Tarawalie (front row left) is the leader of the group. She is thirty-three years old and a widow with three children. All of her children are still in primary school. Zainab pays their school fees and also feeds and clothes them with the little profit she makes out of her business. With this loan her profit margin will increase and her living situation will improve. Zainab sells soft drinks and “rubber drinks” (novelty coasters), cold water, and gari (food made out of cassava). She has been in this business for three years. She will invest this new loan on the same business because she is familiar with these types of items and can do well with them.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee.
