Helena was born in Gaza. She is 42 years old, married, and the mother of 2 children. The oldest is 22 and the second, who is in school, is 20.

Helena moved from Gaza to Namaacha, a village that borders Swaziland, when her husband was transferred to work as a border guard. Several years later her husband lost his life, leaving her with 2 children to raise. Life was very difficult for Helena, so her son in law gave her some money to start her own business. She began by obtaining empty cans in the capital and re-selling them on the border in exchange for lingerie, plastic sandals, and baskets. These she took back to the capital to re-sell, and start the process again. Once her business grew, Helena decided to change because it was very tiring. In 2000 she was able to obtain a stand in the central market where she sells primary goods. Her best sellers are peanuts (1,320 MT a sack), tomatoes (500 a box), coconuts (500 a sack), and oil (450 a box), which are acquired in Swaziland. She travels twice a week because besides selling at the market she also sells at the informal Shoprite market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Helena’s monthly income is 2,500 MT, and she is able to save 500 MT a month. She supports only her grandson.

This is Helena’s second loan with Hluvuku, and her first through Kiva. The 8,000 MTshe is requesting will be used to increase her stock. She is confident that she can repay her loan without problems, because besides being a businesswoman, she is also the 25 de Junho neighborhood secretary from which she gets some income every 3 months. She intends to build her own home on her property.
