Mamuna Wanra is forty-five years old. She is married and has six children who are pursuing education in primary and junior high schools. Mamuna lives with her husband and children in a community called Oda, a town located in the Eastern Region of Ghana. A sizeable number of the inhabitants are engaged in farming activities. However, quite an appreciable number of the women are involved in palm oil production. Mamuna is one of such women who actively produce palm oil. She has been in this business for five years. Her husband is a food crop farmer.

She buys the palm nuts from the local farmers in her community, processes it in her house to produce the oil and sells at wholesale prices to her customers. Palm oil is a local favorite vegetable oil. It is produced from the food of the palm fruit which has been cooked, pounded, sieved and boiled for hours. The reddish substance (the oil) is skimmed off and boiled an additional time to expel water content. She desires to use the loan to expand her business by buying palm fruit in bulk to be able to supply to more customers. She also trades in kenkey, which is one the favorite local dishes, to supplement her income.

She believes the loan assistance would enable her to scale up production to serve a larger market and eventually, help to improve her family finances. She is a member of a Trust Bank group called “Agui Allah” (Translated as God exists) Trust Group. Members in this group guarantee for one another as social collateral to access the loan and support themselves in handling repayment of the loan.
